Is an oil boiler right for your rural home? Five factors to consider
By PCR Plumbers•October 15, 2024

Oil remains an option for many off-grid homes
For properties without mains gas, an oil boiler may remain a practical heating choice. It is not automatically the best option for every home, so compare the condition of the current system, available space, installation cost and longer-term plans.
Five factors to consider
- Existing infrastructure: a serviceable tank, suitable base and sound oil line may reduce the work involved in replacement.
- Fuel storage: the property needs a compliant tank location, safe access for delivery and routine visual checks.
- Heating demand: the appliance and emitters should be selected around the home's actual heat loss and hot-water needs.
- Maintenance: oil boilers require regular servicing, combustion checks and attention to filters, nozzles and the fuel supply.
- Future plans: compare repair or replacement with heat-pump suitability, available grants and any planned insulation work.
